Now summer is upon us (hoorah), it is important we look after our tresses. Everyone knows protecting your skin is important in the summer, but what about your hair?
People with colour treated hair often find the colour bleaches if they spend anytime in the sun, and others (including me) find their hair is brittle, dry and knotty after spending a day down the beach. So what can we do to prevent that? Here are some ideas!
Cover it up!
Wearing protective styles is a quick and easy way of keeping your hair in good shape. Whether this is by wearing a hair accessory, or styling your hair in a way that covers up the most vulnerable parts of your hair. We love wearing headbands like these (and ones featured on our website), and scarfs as they are a great way of covering up your scalp and the most exposed sections of our hair. Another idea is by wearing your hair in french plaits - this helps limit the amount of hair exposed to harsh UV light from the sun and exposed to the salty sea air.
UV Protection
We are all aware of the importance on using SPF on your skin, but what about our hair? While our hair can't 'burn' in the same way our skin can, the suns rays cans till damage the inside and outside of the hair strand, which is why it is so important to use a UV protection spray, such as this one from Lee Stafford. The UV protection means it saves your scalp from burning and adds extra protection to your hair to prevent the colour being bleached, and the moisture being sapped out. It also smells like coconuts - win win!
Conditioner
I'm sure everyone is aware of the benefits of using conditioner when washing your hair, but a lot of people forget it is important to deep conditioner your hair on a regular basis too. This is especially important when your hair has been exposed to harsh UV rays and salty sea water. I personally love this one from Briogeo (and its curly girl friendly!).
Saturate
A really great way of reducing the amount of damage on your hair when swimming in salty or chlorine water is to soak you hair in fresh water beforehand. Your hair will then be unable to absorb the salty/chlorinated water as it is already fully saturated. You can add an extra layer of protection by applying conditioner to your hair as well before getting into the pool/sea. Your hair is then less likely to absorb the salt/chlorine which would majorly dry it out.
Cut out the heat! Frazzling your hair with heat from straighteners etc is not great for your hair anyway. But when you combine that with already dry and brittle hair, you will be causing a lot of damage. So.. cut out the heat! I know its not easy when you have unruly hair - so french plaits and hair accessories will be your new best friend!
Dont stress!
Summer is for enjoyment, and a great time to let your natural hair roam free. Don't worry about it too much! Worse comes to worst, just chuck it up in a bun and enjoy the sun!
