How To Disguise a Bad Hair Day - Curly Girl Method

Updated: Nov 6, 2020

Bad hair days... we all have them. I was half expecting to never have a bad hair day again if I followed the curly girl method (CGM), because people’s transformations pictures always looked so incredible - but I was sadly mistaken!

The longer you do the CGM, and the more you get to know what your hair likes/dislikes, bad hair days are less frequent, however they still happen so figuring out what to do when they happen is essential!

Before following the CGM, if I was having a bad hair day I would just whack the heat on my straighteners up to the highest temperature, and straighten the heck out of it. Obviously, that was probably making the situation worse in the long run, and obviously isn’t an option now as using heat is against the CGM rules, so styling techniques and hair accessories are my go-to!

- PLAITS/BRAIDS

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, learning how to do french plaits is an essential for anyone with long hair! Plaits have saved me on many an occasion. They are fantastic for hiding grease, frizz and a multitude of other sins!

Even if you can’t master french plaits, I frequently just plait the front sections of my hair and clip them back which usually makes me look more presentable too!

- HEADBANDS

I probably have more headbands than any other accessory (hence why I have a whole Etsy shop dedicated to them www.nine9designs.co.uk)! Again, they are fantastic for disguising greasy hair, and frizz. Satin lined headbands are particularly great for curly hair as the satin is really gentle on the hair underneath, so no breakage or any more expressive frizz! In my early CGM days, I really struggled with the way my hair looked and knowing how to style it so it didn’t look weird (IMO), so I experimented wearing headbands, and that’s when i fell in love! Trust me, once you start your headband collection, you wont look back.

- REFRESH

If someone had told me before I started the CGM that exposing my hair to moisture (apart from when washing) was going to make my hair look better, I wouldn’t have believed them. However, one of the key things I’ve learnt while on my CG journey, was that water is good, and is essential for hydrated curls. If my curls are looking a little wonky or fluffy, I will spray my hair using this very special sprayer (it gives a very fine continuous spray - amazing), and finger coil my curls to get them looking less wonky. Glazing over a little gel works really well for my hair too.

- DON’T STRESS

Everyone has bad hair days, and I bet your hair doesn’t look as bad to other people as you think it does. I’ve had people compliment my hair on days when I thought it looked vile (and I bet you have too!). The great thing about hair is that washing it completely resets it, so hopefully your bad hair day wont last for too long :)
